The Commission on Equal Opportunities is comprised of nine members: Eight mayoral appointees and one member from the Board of Alders.  

All mayoral appointees must be approved by the Board of Alders. Term of commission membership is three years. 

The commission is responsible for working with federal, state, and city agencies as well as private, civic, religious, business, industrial, labor and other organizations, groups and persons to achieve harmonious intergroup relations in the community as well as to develop and establish positive programs which will help all members of the community enjoy equality of opportunity in all phases of community life.  

In addition, the commission is responsible for studying and investigating individual or community problems of limited opportunities, prejudice, discrimination, segregation, and disorder and tensions occasioned thereby.
