The Investigative Services Division is responsible for conducting investigations of criminal activity by both individuals and organized groups. The Division includes the following units: 

Major Crimes, Bureau of Identification, Criminal Intelligence, Financial Crimes, Firearms, Fire Investigation, Missing Persons, Special Victims and School Resource Officers. Many of these cases are prosecuted in the courts located on Church Street and Elm Street in New Haven.

The Major Crimes Unit's primary responsibility is to conduct thorough and comprehensive investigations into serious and violent crimes including but not limited to:

The Major Crimes Unit works closely with local allied agencies including the New Haven County District Attorney's Office, Connecticut State Police, Connecticut Department of Justice and the FBI.

Is a large unit with numerous sub units to include the Intelligence Unit, the Shooting Taskforce (STF), the Narcotics Enforcement Unit (NEU), and sworn personnel assigned to the FBI, ATF, DEA, Statewide Narcotics Taskforce, US Marshal’s Taskforce, and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Taskforce (JTTF).  Tips can be anonymously given by calling 866-888-TIPS (8477) or by texting to 274637 (CRIMES).

Investigate crimes committed on residents, and well as businesses, which involve embezzlement, counterfeit checks, forgery, frauds, insurance fraud, identity theft, and more.   Members of this unit are available to educate groups or businesses on safe financial procedures.

The Firearms Unit assists the SVU cases by enforcing court ordered firearms turn-in. The unit also processes New Haven resident (only) pistol permit applications.

The Fire Investigation Unit is responsible for investigation of fires that are intentionally set, suspicious fires, unlawful fires, attempted arson, fires causing a serious injury or death, incendiary devices, and explosives.

Among its many roles, the Missing Persons Unit was charged with the responsibility of coordinating and investigating cases involving missing persons, unidentified living and deceased individuals. The unit also collects and maintains a centralized database on all missing and unidentified persons who are reported in New Haven.

Consists of the Special Victims detectives, Missing Persons Unit, and the Firearms Unit.  These detectives concentrate effort on cases of domestic violence, crimes against children, and victims of sexual assault.

This unit consists of uniformed officers in select schools within the City of New Haven who assist the Board of Education in security matters and the Principals in providing advice and a forward police response.  Many of the SROs during the summer assist the Police Activity League's (PAL) free camp.
