What is a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory?
Our Greenhouse Gas Inventory quantifies the amount of greenhouse gases we’ve emitted as a city, and where those emissions came from over a one-year period.
New Haven’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory
In 2021, New Haven had economy-wide emissions of 1.1 million metric tons (MMT) of carbon-dioxide equivalent (CO2e). That’s as much CO2 as would be released by driving around the world over 100,000 times! Our largest portion of emissions came from Transportation and Mobile sources, which accounted for 24% of our total emissions.
Compared with the 2019 Greenhouse Gas Inventory, emissions declined for every sector, except emissions from the consumption of electricity, which increased 9%, and emissions from industrial thermal energy use, which increased 2%. Overall emissions declined 6%. However, this is largely attributable to a 22% decrease in transportation emissions as drivers reduced their miles traveled during the pandemic.
