Project Title:

Project # 0092-0682 City of New Haven West River Traffic Signal Modernization

Description:

The City of New Haven in conjunction with The Department of Transportation is announcing the start of work on September 9, 2024, weather permitting, for the installation of new traffic signals and pedestrian crossing improvements at the intersections of MLK Jr. Blvd at Sherman Avenue and Legion Avenue (Route 34) at Sherman Avenue.

DOT Project No. 0092-0682 was awarded to DGJ Electrical and Home Improvements, Inc., on January 11, 2024, at a cost of $1,118,817.39 and is scheduled to be completed in March 2025.

Project Background:

In 2018, the City of New Haven was awarded federal grant funding as part of the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement program to upgrade traffic signals at the two (2) intersections along Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK Jr.) Boulevard and Legion Avenue. The goal of the project is to replace the old and antiquated traffic signals with new infrastructure that is consistent with federal and state design guidelines. This includes replacement of existing traffic signal mast arm assemblies and foundations, replacement and relocation of concrete pedestrian ramps, and installation of updated pedestrian crosswalk signals and appurtenances. The two (2) intersections redesigned and upgraded as part of the project are:

  • Intersection #092-280: MLK Jr. Blvd at Sherman Avenue
  • Intersection #092-281: Legion Avenue at Sherman Avenue/Winthrop Avenue

Lane Closure Information:

Roadway construction activity and roadway lane closures will be permitted between the hours of 8:00am and 4:30pm. Motorists are urged to obey the posted speed limit strictly and proceed with caution through this and all other construction work zones.
